Service Area Businesses: How to Set Up Google Maps Without a Storefront

If you go to your customers instead of them coming to you — plumbers, HVAC techs, cleaners, mobile services — you’re a “service-area business” (SAB) on Google. Setting this up correctly is different from a storefront, and getting it wrong is a common cause of poor rankings and even suspensions. Here’s how to do it right.

Storefront vs. service-area business

A storefront has an address customers visit (a shop, restaurant, clinic). A service-area business serves customers at their location and often works from home or a non-public office. Google handles the two differently — and mixing them up causes problems.

The golden rule: hide your address if customers don’t visit

If customers don’t come to you, do not display your address — set your business as service-area only and hide it. Showing a home address you don’t serve customers at (or a fake/virtual one) violates guidelines and risks a suspension. You still enter an address for verification, but you keep it hidden and define service areas instead.

How to set up a service-area business

  1. During setup, when asked if customers visit you, choose no (deliver/serve at their location).
  2. Enter your real address for verification, then hide it.
  3. Define your service areas — list the cities, regions, or ZIP codes you actually serve (Google allows up to a limit; keep it realistic, not the whole state).
  4. Set an accurate primary category (category finder).

The ranking challenge for SABs

Service-area businesses can’t rely on proximity the way storefronts do — you don’t have a public pin customers cluster around, and you often want to rank across a wide area. That makes the other levers even more important: strong reviews, consistent citations, and city/service pages on your website. See local SEO ranking factors and why you rank near your location but not far away.

Best practices

  • Keep your service areas honest — don’t claim regions you can’t serve.
  • Build website pages for your key service cities to reinforce coverage.
  • Collect reviews that mention the cities you work in — natural location signals.
  • Keep NAP consistent even with a hidden address (NAP consistency).

Win a wide area with reviews

Because SABs can’t lean on a storefront pin, reviews and prominence do the heavy lifting to extend your reach. Tailwind automates review collection across every job and city you serve — see how it works, and put it together in how to rank in the map pack.
