The Google “map pack” — the three local businesses shown with a map at the top of local searches — is the most valuable real estate in local SEO. Those three spots capture the majority of clicks and calls. Here’s a practical blueprint for ranking in the map pack for your key searches.

What Google ranks the map pack on

Google weighs three broad factors: relevance (how well you match the search), distance (proximity to the searcher), and prominence (how well-known and well-reviewed you are). You can’t change a searcher’s location, but you can strongly influence relevance and prominence.

1. Nail relevance

  • Primary category is the biggest relevance lever — pick the most precise one (category finder).
  • Complete every profile section so Google understands your services (optimization checklist).
  • Match your website — clear service and city pages reinforce what you do and where.

2. Build prominence (this is where you win)

  • Reviews are the biggest prominence signal you control. Volume, average rating, and recency all feed rankings — see do reviews affect SEO?
  • Citations: consistent listings across the web (citation sites, NAP consistency).
  • Local links: mentions and links from local sites (local link building).
  • Engagement: posts, Q&A, photos, and fast responses signal an active business.

3. Work the distance factor you can influence

You can’t move, but you can expand your effective radius with strong prominence and, for service businesses, correct service-area settings (service-area setup). This is also why you rank near your location but not five miles away — see the proximity explanation.

4. Track and iterate

Rankings vary by the searcher’s exact location, so use grid-based rank tracking, not a single check (rank tracking tools). Watch your Insights (the 6 metrics that predict calls) and adjust.

The priority order

If you’re starting from scratch: (1) perfect your profile and category, (2) fix NAP and citations, (3) collect reviews relentlessly, (4) build local links, (5) keep the profile active. Reviews and category do the heaviest lifting for most local businesses. Audit where you stand with the free local SEO audit.
