How to Raise Prices Without Losing Your Best Customers
Why you have to raise prices
Costs rise every year; if your prices don’t, your margin quietly erodes until you’re working harder for less. Most contractors under-price to begin with (from skipping labor burden and overhead — labor burden, overhead recovery) and then avoid increases out of fear. The result is a business that’s busy and unprofitable. Raising prices isn’t greedy — it’s survival.
The fear is overblown — here’s why
Owners imagine a mass exodus when they raise prices. In reality, your best customers value quality and reliability over squeezing the lowest price — they barely flinch at a reasonable increase. The customers you might lose are the price-shoppers who were never loyal and often the least profitable anyway. A well-run price increase usually improves both margin and customer mix.
How to raise prices the right way
- Know your numbers first. Use job costing to see where you’re actually underwater, so increases are targeted, not random (job costing, margin benchmarks).
- Raise deliberately, not drastically. Sensible, periodic increases beat a shock jump.
- Lead with value, not apology. Frame around what customers get — quality, warranty, reliability, licensed pros. Never apologize for charging fairly.
- Give existing customers notice and, where it fits, a heads-up or grace period — it shows respect and reduces churn.
- Use options to soften it. Good-better-best lets customers self-select a price point (option pricing).
- Update your price book so the new prices are consistent everywhere (price book).
- Train techs to handle pushback with value, not discounts (objection handling).
Time it well
- Raise ahead of your busy season, when demand is strong.
- Tie it to visible improvements (better warranty, faster service) when you can.
- Don’t wait until you’re desperate — regular small adjustments are easier than one big catch-up.
Reputation is your price-increase insurance
The single biggest factor in whether customers accept higher prices is trust — and reviews build it. A business with a wall of five-star reviews raises prices and keeps its customers; one without them gets shopped on price. Tailwind builds that reputation automatically, so you can charge what you’re worth and keep your best customers — see how it works.
