Your Price Is Too High: 9 Objection-Handling Responses for the Phone

“Your price is too high.” Every contractor hears it, and most respond by either caving on price or getting defensive — both lose. The right response reframes the conversation around value and keeps the door open. Here are nine objection-handling responses you can use on the phone and on site.

First, understand what the objection means

“Too expensive” rarely means “I can’t afford it.” Usually it means “I don’t yet see why you’re worth it” or “I’m comparing you to a number I saw elsewhere.” Your job isn’t to argue — it’s to surface the real concern and rebuild value. Never discount reflexively; that just teaches customers your price is soft.

9 responses that keep the deal alive

  1. Acknowledge, then explore: “I hear you. Can I ask what you’re comparing it to?” — surfaces an apples-to-oranges quote.
  2. Reframe to value: “I get it. Here’s what’s included that protects you: [warranty, licensed techs, no surprise fees].”
  3. Isolate the objection: “Other than price, is this the right solution for you?” — confirms it’s only about money.
  4. Cost vs. price: “The cheaper option often costs more when it fails or needs a redo. We do it once, right.”
  5. Break it down: “Over the [X years] this lasts, it’s about [$/month] for [peace of mind].”
  6. Offer options, not discounts: “I can adjust the scope — here’s a good/better/best” (option pricing).
  7. Social proof: “Most of our customers had the same question — here’s why they chose us [reviews/results].”
  8. The honest close: “I won’t be the cheapest, and I won’t cut corners to get there. What matters most to you on this job?”
  9. Payment flexibility: “If budget is the issue, we offer [financing/payment terms] — would that help?”

What not to do

  • Don’t drop your price the second you’re pushed — it signals you were overcharging.
  • Don’t get defensive or badmouth the competitor.
  • Don’t leave without a next step (follow-up).

Train it into the team

Role-play these in your huddle, review real calls on a scorecard, and give your CSRs the same language (CSR script).

Reviews win the price argument for you

The best objection handler is a wall of five-star reviews — customers who trust you argue less about price. When your reputation does the pre-selling, “too expensive” comes up far less often. Tailwind builds that reputation automatically — see how it works.
