Presenting a single price forces a yes-or-no decision — and “no” is easy. Presenting good-better-best options changes the question from “should I buy?” to “which one?”, and it reliably raises your average ticket. Here’s how to build and present option-based pricing, with examples.

Why options beat a single price

Three things happen when you offer tiers:

  • The decision shifts from buy/don’t-buy to which-one — you’re far more likely to close something.
  • Anchoring lifts the average. The premium option makes the middle look reasonable; many customers trade up from what they’d have picked with no options.
  • Customers self-select by budget and needs, so you win price-sensitive and premium buyers alike.

How to structure the three tiers

  • Good (the essential fix): solves the immediate problem at the lowest price. Your anchor for value shoppers.
  • Better (the recommended): the essential plus the obvious add-ons most customers should choose — position this as your recommendation.
  • Best (the premium): the complete solution — top parts, extended warranty, maintenance plan, upgrades. Some will take it; it makes “Better” look smart.

Example (HVAC repair)

  • Good: Replace the failed part, standard warranty.
  • Better: Replace the part + a system tune-up + a 2-year warranty. (Recommended.)
  • Best: Replace the part + tune-up + extended warranty + a maintenance membership. (membership pricing.)

How to present options well

  1. Present in person or in a clear proposal, not a verbal jumble (estimating software makes this easy).
  2. Lead with the recommendation (Better) and explain why.
  3. Frame around outcomes, not just parts — reliability, peace of mind, avoiding the next breakdown.
  4. Let the customer choose without pressure — options sell themselves.
  5. Train techs to present consistently (upselling without being salesy).

Avoid the traps

  • Don’t make “Good” a bad option nobody should pick — it must be a real, honest choice.
  • Don’t overwhelm with too many tiers — three is the sweet spot.
  • Don’t pressure — the structure does the work.

Options close faster with trust

Customers pick a higher tier when they trust you — and reviews build that trust before you ever quote. A well-reviewed contractor’s “Better” option gets chosen far more often than a stranger’s. Tailwind builds that trust automatically, so your options land on receptive ears — see how it works.
