Credit Card Processing Fees Explained: What SMBs Really Pay in 2026
Rates and rules change — verify current numbers and any legal specifics for your situation.
What you actually pay
Most small businesses pay an all-in effective rate between 1.5% and 3.5% per transaction, plus a small fixed fee (roughly 10–30¢). Recent 2026 figures put the average effective cost around 1.79% + $0.08 for in-person transactions and about 2.31% + $0.25 for online/keyed transactions — card-present is cheaper because it’s lower risk. On a $400 job, that’s roughly $7–$12 gone to fees.
How the fee structure works
Your total processing cost has three layers:
- Interchange — the wholesale fee set by the card networks and paid to the customer’s bank. It’s 70–80% of your total cost and is identical no matter which processor you use — nobody can discount it.
- Assessments — small network fees (Visa ~0.14%, Mastercard ~0.1375% on most transactions).
- Processor markup — what your processor charges on top. This is the only part that’s negotiable.
Note: a 2026 legal settlement is set to lower average credit interchange for several years — worth watching, as it should reduce the biggest piece of the bill.
Pricing models to know
- Interchange-plus: interchange + a transparent fixed markup. Usually the best deal and easiest to audit — favor this.
- Flat-rate: one simple rate (e.g., ~2.9% + fixed). Predictable and easy, but you often overpay on lower-cost cards.
- Tiered: “qualified/mid/non-qualified” buckets. Opaque and usually the worst value — avoid.
How to stop overpaying
- Get on interchange-plus so you can see the real markup.
- Negotiate the markup — it’s the only lever, so use it; shop processors.
- Watch for junk fees — statement, PCI, batch, gateway fees add up.
- Encourage lower-cost payments where sensible (ACH/ bank transfer for big invoices).
- Consider surcharging/cash discounts — legal in many places with rules; know your state (surcharge laws).
- Reconcile monthly — track your true effective rate as part of your books (chart of accounts).
Bake fees into your pricing
Whatever you pay, make sure it’s accounted for in your prices so it doesn’t silently erode margin (price book, overhead recovery). A 3% fee ignored is 3% of profit gone.
The best offset for fees is more high-value jobs
You can shave your processing rate a little — but you can grow revenue a lot. A strong review profile wins more (and higher-value) jobs, which dwarfs what you’ll save trimming fees. Tailwind builds that reputation automatically — see how it works.
