Ride-Alongs and Working Interviews: How to Test a Tech Before You Hire
Paid working interviews have legal/wage implications — this is general guidance, not legal advice. Confirm wage-and-hour and insurance rules for your situation.
Why interviews alone aren’t enough
Interviews test how well someone talks about the work. A working interview tests the work itself — real diagnostics, real customer interaction, real habits. You’ll see things no interview surfaces: how they treat a customer’s home, whether they explain things clearly, how they handle a curveball, and whether their claimed skills are real (interview questions get you to this stage; the ride-along confirms it).
What to watch for
- Technical ability — do they actually diagnose and fix competently, or just sound like it?
- Customer skills — courtesy, clear explanations, professionalism in the home (this drives your reviews).
- Work habits — punctuality, cleanliness, safety, attention to detail (completion standards).
- Problem-solving — how they handle the unexpected.
- Attitude & fit — how they interact with your team and take direction (culture).
How to run a working interview
- Pay them for their time. Working interviews for real work should be compensated — it’s the right thing and it keeps you compliant.
- Pair them with a strong tech who models your standards and can observe.
- Handle logistics — insurance, a clear scope, and let customers know as appropriate.
- Give real (but supervised) tasks so you see genuine ability without risk.
- Use a consistent evaluation — the same scorecard for every candidate (scorecards).
- Debrief both sides — it’s a two-way fit check; they’re evaluating you too.
It protects both of you
A working interview isn’t just about screening out bad hires — it lets a good candidate confirm your shop is the right fit, which improves retention. Everyone starts with eyes open, and you avoid the huge cost of a hire that doesn’t work out (turnover cost). Follow it with strong onboarding for the ones you keep (onboarding).
Hire for the experience that earns reviews
The single most valuable thing a working interview reveals is how a tech treats customers — because that’s what turns into five-star reviews or one-star complaints. Screen for it in the field, and Tailwind will capture the results once they’re on the team, automatically requesting a review after every job — see how it works.
