Revenue Per Tech: Capacity Planning Before You Buy Another Truck

Before you buy another truck and hire another tech, answer one question: are your current techs producing what they should? Revenue per technician is the capacity-planning metric that tells you whether to hire, optimize, or fix your pricing first. Here’s how to use it.

What revenue per tech tells you

Revenue per technician = total revenue ÷ number of field techs. It’s a measure of how much each tech produces — and it’s the single best gut-check before you expand capacity. If your techs are highly productive and you’re turning away work, it’s time to add capacity. If revenue per tech is low, adding another truck just multiplies an inefficiency — you should fix utilization or pricing first (weekly KPIs).

Why it drives capacity decisions

Adding a tech and truck is a big, largely fixed cost — wages, burden, vehicle, tools, insurance. It only pays off if there’s enough demand to keep them productive. Revenue per tech, combined with your booking trends, tells you whether the demand is really there or whether you’d just be spreading the same work across more people (and cratering the metric).

What drives the number

  • Utilization — billable hours vs. idle/drive time (route optimization, dispatching).
  • Average ticket — options, upsells, memberships (option pricing).
  • Pricing — are jobs priced to real cost and margin? (margins)
  • Efficiency — first-time fix, fewer callbacks (FTFR).
  • Demand — enough leads to keep techs full (lead gen).

The decision framework

  1. Calculate revenue per tech and track the trend.
  2. Low and you’re not turning work away? Fix utilization, pricing, and average ticket before hiring — you’ll boost revenue with no added cost.
  3. High and consistently maxed out? Now expansion makes sense — you have the demand to keep a new tech productive.
  4. Model the new hire — can demand keep them busy, and do margins cover the added cost? (true cost of a tech)
  5. Grow demand ahead of capacity so the new truck is booked from day one.

Fill new capacity before you add it

The safest time to add a truck is when demand already outstrips your team — and reviews are what create that demand. A strong review engine keeps your pipeline full, so each new tech is productive immediately instead of sitting idle. Tailwind builds that demand automatically by turning every job into reputation — see how it works.

Maximize the trucks you have, then add the next. See how Tailwind works.
