How to Write a Technician Job Ad That Gets 30 Applicants

A great technician job ad is the difference between 3 unqualified applicants and 30 good ones. Most contractor job posts are boring lists of requirements that repel the exact people you want. Here’s how to write a technician job ad that actually gets applicants — with a template.

Why most job ads fail

The typical tech job post reads like a demand letter: “Must have X years, must have Y certs, must do Z.” It’s all about what you want and nothing about why a skilled tech would want to work for you. Good techs have options — your ad has to sell the job, not just list requirements. In a tight labor market, the ad is a marketing document (where to find techs).

The job ad template

1. A headline that stands out

Not “HVAC Technician Wanted.” Try “Experienced HVAC Tech — Top Pay, Great Team, Take-Home Truck.” Lead with what’s in it for them.

2. Sell the opportunity (first, and most)

  • Pay range (yes, include it — ads with pay get far more applicants).
  • Benefits — health, PTO, retirement (benefits you can afford).
  • What makes you a great place to work — culture, respect, growth (career ladder).
  • Perks — take-home vehicle, tools, ongoing training, spiffs (bonuses).

3. Describe the role clearly

  • What they’ll actually do day to day.
  • The team and support they’ll have.

4. List requirements — but keep them real

  • True must-haves (license/certs, experience level, clean driving record).
  • Don’t pile on “nice-to-haves” as requirements — you’ll scare off good candidates who’d thrive.

5. Make applying easy

  • A short, mobile-friendly application — every extra step loses applicants.
  • Clear next step and fast response (good techs get hired quickly).

Where to post it

Put your great ad in front of the right people — job boards, trade schools, referrals, and social (12 sourcing channels). Then screen well with a working interview (ride-alongs) and strong interview questions (interview questions).

Your reviews are a recruiting tool

Skilled techs research employers just like customers do — a company with a wall of five-star reviews looks like a well-run, desirable place to work, while a poorly-reviewed one is a red flag. Your public reputation quietly recruits for you. Tailwind builds that reputation automatically after every job — see how it works.
