Google's Review Policy in 2026: What Gets Reviews Removed

Google’s review policies decide which reviews stay, which get removed, and what can get your Business Profile penalized. Knowing them helps you get unfair reviews taken down — and avoid accidentally breaking the rules yourself. Here’s what Google’s review policy actually says in 2026, in plain English.

What Google prohibits (these can be removed)

  • Fake engagement: reviews that don’t reflect a genuine experience, including bought reviews and reviews from people who were never customers.
  • Conflicts of interest: reviewing your own business, or a competitor reviewing you. Employees and owners shouldn’t leave undisclosed reviews.
  • Spam: repeated content, ads, links, or the same review posted across many businesses.
  • Off-topic: content unrelated to a customer experience — political rants, personal disputes, general commentary.
  • Restricted, illegal, or dangerous content.
  • Harassment, hate speech, profanity, and personal/confidential information.
  • Impersonation and misrepresentation.

What Google does NOT remove

Honest negative reviews from real customers. Google won’t take down criticism just because it’s unfair or hurts your rating. For those, your best move is a calm public reply — see how to respond to negative reviews.

Rules for businesses (not just reviewers)

  • No incentives in exchange for reviews — see incentivizing reviews.
  • No review gating (soliciting only happy customers) — see is review gating illegal?
  • No discouraging or prohibiting negative reviews, and no review “stations” that filter sentiment.
  • Ask genuinely and let customers speak freely.

Violations can lead to removed reviews or, in serious cases, a flagged or suspended profile.

How to use the policy

When a review breaks one of these rules, report it citing the specific violation — vague complaints get rejected. The step-by-step process is in how to remove a Google review. And make sure your own collection process stays clean; the FTC now backs many of these rules with real penalties — see the FTC fake review rule.
