Website Redesign Without Losing Rankings: A Migration Checklist

Website & Content
May 01, 2026
A website redesign should grow your business — but done carelessly, it can wipe out years of hard-won Google rankings overnight. The horror stories are real: traffic drops 60% the week the new site goes live. Here’s the migration checklist that keeps your rankings intact through a redesign.

Why redesigns tank rankings

Google’s trust in your site is tied to specific URLs, content, and signals it has indexed over time. A redesign that changes URLs, removes content, or breaks links without a plan tells Google “everything you knew about this site is gone” — and rankings collapse until it re-learns (if it ever fully does). The good news: every one of these risks is preventable with a checklist.

Before you launch

  1. Crawl and document the current site. Record every URL, its traffic, and its rankings — you can’t protect what you haven’t mapped.
  2. Preserve your best content. Identify top-ranking, high-traffic pages and carry their content forward — don’t quietly delete them.
  3. Keep URLs the same where possible. The safest redesign changes design, not URLs.
  4. Plan 301 redirects for every URL that must change — old URL → closest new equivalent. This is the single most important step.
  5. Preserve titles, meta, and headings on migrated pages, or improve them deliberately — don’t lose them by accident.
  6. Keep your schema/structured data (LocalBusiness, reviews, FAQ) intact (review schema).
  7. Maintain internal links between service and city pages (service pages, city pages).

At launch

  • Implement and test every 301 redirect — no redirect chains, no 404s.
  • Don’t leave the staging site blocking crawlers — make sure the live site is indexable (remove any noindex/robots block from staging).
  • Keep it fast and mobile-first (Core Web Vitals, mobile).
  • Preserve trust and conversion elements — reviews, CTAs, trust signals (trust signals).

After you launch

  1. Submit the new sitemap in Google Search Console.
  2. Crawl for 404s and broken links and fix them fast.
  3. Monitor rankings and traffic closely for weeks — catch drops early.
  4. Check Search Console for coverage and indexing errors.
  5. Expect a brief dip as Google re-crawls; a well-executed migration recovers quickly.

Don’t lose your reviews in the move

One thing that quietly disappears in many redesigns: the reviews and social proof that were converting visitors on the old site. Make sure your review display carries over from day one. Tailwind’s widget re-embeds on the new site instantly and keeps pulling fresh reviews — so a redesign never costs you your best converter — see how it works.
