Semrush and Ahrefs Alternatives for Local Businesses

Local SEO & GBP
25.01.2025
Semrush and Ahrefs are built for SEO agencies juggling dozens of client sites: keyword research at a scale no single location needs, backlink indexes with billions of links, and crawlers built for sites with tens of thousands of pages. A one-location business pays $129 to $139 a month for that and uses maybe 5% of it. The alternatives below start at $24.99 a month, are built around a single storefront instead of a client portfolio, and two of them track the thing Semrush and Ahrefs barely touch: how your business actually ranks on the map around your location.

When Semrush and Ahrefs are still the right choice

Both tools are genuinely good at what they're built for. Semrush's cheapest paid tier, SEO at $139/month ($117.33/month billed annually), covers 5 websites and 500 keywords with daily rank tracking, keyword research and a technical site audit; its Starter and Pro+ tiers add AI visibility tracking (prompts checked against ChatGPT and other AI tools) and historical data back to 2012, and scale up to 15 websites and 1,500 keywords. Ahrefs' Lite plan is $129/month ($107.50 annually) for 5 projects, 750 tracked keywords and 100,000 crawl credits, and its backlink index is one of the largest and most frequently updated in the industry — Standard and Advanced plans push that to 2,000 or 5,000 tracked keywords and millions of crawl credits. If you manage SEO for several client sites, need deep backlink analysis to win link-building pitches, run technical crawls across sites with thousands of pages, or do original keyword research at volume to build out new content, that's exactly the job these tools were priced for. An agency billing five or ten clients a month recoups $139 or $249 easily; a single-location owner doing their own SEO on the side rarely does.

Almost none of that applies if you run one location, maybe a handful. You're not pitching clients on backlink counts, you're not auditing 10,000 pages, and you don't need 500 to 750 tracked keywords when 20 to 50 cover everything a local customer actually searches for. What you need is simpler: does Google Business Profile look right, does the site have the basic technical fixes in place, is the structured data a search engine needs actually present, and where do you rank for the handful of phrases that bring in customers. Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs shows you a geo-grid of how your ranking shifts a mile down the road, and neither manages your Google Business Profile for you. That's the gap local SEO software built for owners fills, and it's why the tools below exist at a fraction of the price.

1. BrightLocal

A local SEO platform built around the tasks a single-location business actually does: tracking rankings, fixing listings and watching how AI tools describe the business. The Track plan is $41/month for one location ($31/month billed annually) and includes the Local AI Visibility Tracker, local rank monitoring for up to 100 keywords, geo-grid visualization showing exactly where you rank at different points on the map, citation tracking across directories, and a Google Business Profile audit. The Manage plan ($54/month) adds data sync tools, and Grow ($65/month) layers on review monitoring and request campaigns. A separate Citation Builder service is billed per citation starting at $2 each, pay-as-you-go. Multi-location pricing scales down per location as you add more, from roughly $47 to $65 each for 2 to 5 locations.

Where BrightLocal earns its keep over Semrush or Ahrefs is the geo-grid view: instead of one rank number for your whole city, you see a map with a score at every point, so you can tell whether you're invisible three blocks away or genuinely competitive citywide. Neither Semrush nor Ahrefs shows that, because neither was built around a single physical address.

  • Switch if: you want dedicated local rank tracking, citation management and a GBP audit with published, per-location pricing, and you don't need backlink data or keyword research at Semrush/Ahrefs scale.
  • Stay with Semrush/Ahrefs if: you need backlink analysis, competitor content research, or technical crawls across sites with thousands of pages.

2. Local Falcon

The narrowest tool on this list, and that's the point. Local Falcon only does one thing: geo-grid rank tracking, showing how your Google Business Profile ranks for a keyword across a grid of points around your location, not just at your front door. The Starter plan is $24.99/month for 7,500 credits (a single 5x5 grid scan uses 25 credits), with unlimited keywords and locations, AI visibility tracking, and campaign, competitor and trend reports. Higher tiers (Basic at $49.99, Pro at $99.99, Premium at $199.99) add a Looker Studio connector, Zapier/n8n integration and API access. New accounts get 100 free credits to try it, and extra credits can be bought separately at $0.05 each with no expiry.

Credits, not seats, drive the price here: unlimited keywords and locations are included on every plan, and what you pay for is scan volume. A single-location business running a handful of 5x5 or 7x7 grid scans a month on a few keywords can comfortably stay on Starter; an agency running dozens of scans across client locations would burn through credits fast and should look at Basic or Pro instead.

  • Switch if: all you actually want from Semrush or Ahrefs is to see where you rank on the map around your location, not keyword research volume or backlink counts.
  • Stay with Semrush/Ahrefs if: you need keyword research, content tools or backlink data alongside rank tracking — Local Falcon doesn't have any of that.

3. tailwind.reviews

Our tool, built for a single location rather than a client portfolio. It runs a free site audit, manages your Google Business Profile, fixes the schema markup that helps Google and AI tools understand your business, and tracks your weekly keyword rankings (20 to 200 keywords depending on plan). Local SEO is one module inside a broader platform that also handles review requests, AI-drafted review replies and tracking how ChatGPT and other AI tools describe your business when customers ask for recommendations near them. Published pricing starts at $5/month for the SEO toolkit alone, or $50/month for the full platform (reviews, AI visibility and SEO together) — you can see how Tailwind compares to other tools if you want the full picture against reviews-first and SEO-first competitors alike.

The pitch here isn't that tailwind.reviews out-researches Semrush or Ahrefs; it doesn't try to. It's that most of what a single-location owner actually needs from "SEO" (a clean Google Business Profile, correct schema, no broken technical basics, and knowing whether rankings are moving) sits next to the reviews and AI-visibility work most owners are already doing, instead of in a separate subscription built and priced for agencies.

  • Switch if: you want local SEO basics — audit, GBP, schema, rank tracking — bundled with reviews and AI-search visibility, at a published single-location price.
  • Stay with Semrush/Ahrefs if: you need deep keyword research tools, a large backlink index, or you're managing SEO across many unrelated domains. We track far fewer keywords and don't do backlink analysis at all.

Before you switch off Semrush or Ahrefs

  1. Export what you'll lose access to — historical keyword rankings, backlink reports, any content briefs or site audit history you might want later.
  2. List what you actually open each week. Most single-location owners use rank tracking and a site audit, and little else. Match that list to the alternative, not the longest feature page.
  3. Check your Google Business Profile is verified and you have owner access before connecting a new tool to it.
  4. Re-point any tracked keywords so you're not starting rank history from zero on day one.
  5. Cancel before the next renewal date, not after. Semrush's 7-day trial and annual plans, and Ahrefs' annual plans, both auto-renew unless you cancel inside your account settings ahead of time.

Questions owners ask

What's the cheapest Semrush or Ahrefs alternative for a single location?

Among the tools compared here, tailwind.reviews has the lowest starting price at $5/month for the SEO toolkit, followed by Local Falcon at $24.99/month and BrightLocal's Track plan at $41/month ($31 billed annually), as of October 31, 2026. Local Falcon only does geo-grid rank tracking; the other two bundle in more.

Do Semrush or Ahrefs have a free plan?

Semrush has a free plan with one demo project and 10 reports a day, plus a 7-day free trial on paid plans. Ahrefs offers a limited free tier and a $29/month Starter plan for basic competitive research, alongside its main Lite, Standard, Advanced and Enterprise tiers. Neither free tier replaces the local rank tracking or Google Business Profile tools a single-location owner is usually after.

Can I track local rankings without Semrush or Ahrefs?

Yes. BrightLocal, Local Falcon and tailwind.reviews all track local rankings on their own, without needing a Semrush or Ahrefs subscription underneath them. BrightLocal and Local Falcon add geo-grid visualization, showing how rankings shift at different points on the map, which neither Semrush nor Ahrefs offers.

Which alternative also handles reviews and AI visibility, not just SEO?

tailwind.reviews is the only tool compared here that combines local SEO with review management and AI-visibility tracking in one subscription. BrightLocal's higher-tier Grow plan adds review tools on top of its SEO features; Local Falcon stays focused on rank tracking only.
