Review Bombed? A 72-Hour Playbook for Coordinated Attacks and Extortion

Review bombing — a sudden flood of fake or malicious one-star reviews — can tank your rating overnight. It might come from a competitor, an extortion attempt, a viral pile-on, or a single angry individual with many accounts. Whatever the source, panicking makes it worse. Here’s a calm 72-hour playbook to protect your reputation.

First, confirm it’s actually an attack

A cluster of negatives in a short window, from accounts with no history, generic or identical wording, or reviewers who were never customers, is a coordinated attack — not normal criticism. Genuine bad reviews, even several at once, are handled differently (see responding to negative reviews).

Hours 0–24: document and report

  1. Screenshot everything — the reviews, reviewer profiles, timestamps. You’ll need evidence, and attackers often delete accounts.
  2. Flag each fake review for policy violation (fake, conflict of interest, harassment). Report from your verified Business Profile — see how to remove a Google review.
  3. Do not respond angrily. Don’t reply to each fake review individually in the heat of the moment.

Hours 24–48: respond strategically

  • Post one calm, public statement on a couple of the reviews (not all): “We’re aware of a recent set of reviews that don’t reflect real customer experiences and we’ve reported them. We stand by our work — here’s how to reach us: [contact].” This reassures real customers reading the profile.
  • Escalate to platform support with your evidence. A documented, coordinated attack is exactly what removal teams act on.
  • If it’s extortion (“pay us or the bad reviews continue”), do not pay. Document it and report it as extortion to the platform — and to law enforcement if credible.

Hours 48–72: dilute and rebuild

Removal takes time and isn’t guaranteed, so the fastest way to recover your rating is to flood the profile with genuine reviews. Reach out to your happy recent customers and make it effortless with a direct review link. A wave of real five-stars buries the fakes and restores your average even before the bad ones come down.

Prevention: monitoring + a strong baseline

Two things make you resilient: catching an attack early, and having enough genuine reviews that a burst of fakes can’t dominate. Tailwind monitors mentions and reviews across platforms so you’re alerted fast, and keeps a steady flow of real reviews coming in as a buffer — see mention and reputation monitoring.
