What this calculator does

Most rating calculators assume every new review is a perfect 5★. Real life isn’t like that — even a great business collects the odd 4★ or 3★. This calculator lets you set the realistic average of the reviews you’ll actually get, so the number it gives you is one you can hit rather than a best-case fantasy. It also turns that number into a timeline and a month-by-month projection, and it flips around to answer the question owners ask after a rough week: how much did that one bad review just cost me?

How to read the result

The core formula is: needed = reviews × (target − current) ÷ (new-average − target). The closer the quality of your new reviews is to the target, the more reviews it takes, and once the new-review average drops to or below the target, no amount of reviews will get you there. That isn’t a bug — it’s how averages work. When you add a monthly pace, the green bar in the chart marks the month your average finally crosses the target.

Limitations

This is a planning model, not a promise. It assumes your new reviews average out to the quality you entered and that you collect at a steady pace — reality is lumpier. Platforms also display the average rounded to one decimal and may weight recent reviews, so the on-screen number can move a little differently from the raw mean. Use the result as a target to aim at, not a guarantee.

Frequently asked questions

How many reviews do I need to raise my rating?

It depends on how many you already have and how good the new ones are. The formula is: needed = current reviews × (target − current rating) ÷ (average of new reviews − target). With few reviews you move fast; with hundreds, each new review barely shifts the average.

Why does the calculator say my target is unreachable?

Averages can never rise above the quality of what you add. If your new reviews come in at 4.6★ on average, you can never average your way to 4.7★. Aim for a target below your realistic new-review average, or collect genuinely higher-rated reviews.

How long will it take to reach my target?

Enter how many reviews you collect per month and the calculator divides the number needed by that pace, then shows the month you’d cross your target and a projected-average chart.

How much does one bad review really cost?

Switch to “Cost of a bad review.” At a low review count, a single 1★ review can drop your average by a tenth of a star or more, and it can take several new 5★ reviews to recover.
