How we calculate “Right now”
A star average covers a business’s whole life on a platform. “Right now” answers the question a customer actually has: is this business all right at the moment? It compares the share of 1–2★ public reviews in the last 3 complete months with the business’s own level over the year before.
What we count
Public reviews Tailwind stores, per calendar month, pooled across every review platform shown on the page. A complaint is a 1–2★ review — the same definition as the page’s issue rate. Nothing is needed from the business.
Which months
Months are calendar months (UTC), and only complete ones count: on October 7 the last complete month is September. “Now” is the last 3 complete months. “Usually” is the 12 months before them — the business’s own level, never an industry average. The chart shows all 15 months, including months without reviews.
When we compare
Only when there are at least 30 reviews in the last 3 months, and at least 60 reviews in 6 or more months of the year before. Otherwise the block shows the counts and says there is not enough data — never a verdict. With this few reviews only a large change shows up, and that is intended.
How we decide
Each window’s share is complaints divided by reviews, with a 95% confidence interval (Wilson). A two-sided two-proportion z-test at the 95% level decides: fewer complaints than usual, more than usual, or no clear change when the difference could be chance. The page shows the size of the difference in percentage points, rounded to 0.1; the label says which way it goes.
What is always shown
Whatever the verdict: reviews and complaints in both windows, the months each one covers, the 15-month chart and the date of the latest review — so “no recent complaints” can be told apart from “no recent reviews either”.
What it cannot tell you
- Public reviewers are a small, self-selected part of a business’s customers, and platforms invite them unevenly. If a business changes how it asks for reviews, the share changes without any change in service.
- A quarter can be seasonal: the usual level spans a full year, the recent window does not.
- Reviews are dated by publication, which can trail the job by weeks.
The method is fixed
Fixed on October 7, 2026, before any business’s result was looked at. A change to a window, a threshold or the test becomes a new version; this one is never edited. The rules are the same for every business.
