Online Review Statistics 2026: 80+ Data Points
How many people actually read reviews
97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses, and 41% say they "always" read reviews when browsing — up from 29% the year before (BrightLocal, Local Consumer Review Survey 2026, February 2026, n=1,002 US adults). The jump in "always" readers is the more interesting number: reviews have shifted from a sometimes-check to a default step.
The average consumer now checks 6 different review sites before deciding whether to trust a local business (BrightLocal, 2024/2025 survey editions). If your review strategy only covers Google, you're invisible on the other five.
What a positive or negative review is actually worth
85% of consumers say they're more likely to use a business after reading positive reviews; 77% say they're put off by negative ones (BrightLocal, 2026). That's not a small tilt — it's most of your potential customers making a decision based on what's already been written about you.
On the academic side, Harvard Business School researcher Michael Luca found that a one-star increase on Yelp correlates with a 5–9% revenue increase for independent restaurants — with no measurable effect for chain restaurants, because chain customers already know what they're getting (Michael Luca, "Reviews, Reputation, and Revenue: The Case of Yelp.com," Harvard Business School working paper). The effect is about filling in uncertainty, which is exactly what independent, unfamiliar businesses need reviews to do.
A Berkeley study (Anderson & Magruder) found that restaurants gaining an extra half-star on Yelp sold out 19 percentage points — roughly 49% — more often during peak hours, with the effect strongest for restaurants sitting in the 3.5–4.0 star range. That's the band where a review bump does the most work, because it's the band where customers are genuinely on the fence.
The star rating sweet spot (and why a perfect 5.0 can backfire)
Shoppers who interact with ratings and reviews convert at a 120.3% higher rate than those who don't. Getting past 100 reviews lifts conversion more than 250%, and crossing 5,000 reviews lifts it nearly 293% versus having none at all (PowerReviews, Average Rating Impact on Conversion, 2025 benchmark report).
Here's the counlitutive part: the actual sweet spot for conversion sits at 4.5–4.99 stars, not a perfect 5.0. 46% of shoppers — and 53% of Gen Z specifically — say they're suspicious of a business with a flawless 5-star rating, assuming it's been filtered or faked (PowerReviews, 2025). A spotless record reads as curated, not trustworthy.
69% of consumers say they don't trust a star rating alone without reading the written review behind it (PowerReviews, 2025) — which is one more reason review volume and substance matter as much as the number on top. Use a tool like a review ROI calculator to see what closing that gap is actually worth to your business.
Recency: why old reviews stop counting
74% of consumers only care about reviews from the last 3 months, and 32% say they only trust reviews from the last 2 weeks — up from 20% a year earlier (BrightLocal, 2026). A business that collected 40 glowing reviews in 2023 and nothing since reads, to most shoppers, as a business with zero current reviews.
How many of these reviews are even real
Roughly 30% of online reviews are estimated to be fake or inauthentic on average, with figures as high as 43% reported on some major platforms (aggregated fake-review research, 2025 figures — treat this range as directional rather than a single precise number, since methodologies vary widely between studies).
Google removed or blocked 240 million policy-violating reviews in 2024 (Google Transparency reporting, 2024) — a reminder that platforms are actively fighting this, not ignoring it. Trustpilot's own transparency reporting shows review removal climbing too: about 11% of reviews submitted in 2025 were removed as fake (7.8 million reviews), up from 7.4% in 2024 and 6.1% in 2023.
This is now a regulatory matter, not just a platform-policy one. The FTC's rule banning fake reviews and deceptive testimonials took effect October 21, 2024, with fines up to $51,744 per violation (FTC final rule, 2024). If you've ever been tempted to buy reviews or incentivize only happy customers to post, that door is now legally closed, not just against the terms of service.
Reviews as a local-search ranking factor
The most commonly cited breakdown of local ranking factors — Moz's 2018 Local Search Ranking Factors study — put review signals at 15.44% of what drives Local Pack rankings, behind Google Business Profile signals (25.12%) and links (16.53%). That study has since been retired. Whitespark's 2026 local ranking factors survey is its closest modern successor, and it reportedly shows review signals carrying similar or slightly greater weight, with review velocity and recency counted more heavily than they were in 2018. Treat any specific percentage as a rough signal of importance, not an exact formula — no search engine publishes its actual weighting.
AI assistants are now part of this conversation
Perhaps the single biggest shift in this whole dataset: AI tools like ChatGPT jumped from a 6% to a 45% share of local-business discovery in just one year, now ahead of Yelp and Tripadvisor as a discovery channel (BrightLocal, 2026). 49% of US consumers say they now trust AI-generated recommendations as much as a personal recommendation, up from 42% the year before (BrightLocal, 2026).
That's not a future trend to plan for — by the numbers above, it's already happened. The same reviews that build your star rating are increasingly what AI assistants read before recommending you by name.
What this means for your business
None of these numbers matter in isolation — they matter together. Consumers check 6 sites, weight the last 3 months most heavily, distrust a suspiciously perfect score, and increasingly ask an AI assistant instead of searching themselves. The business that wins isn't the one with the single highest rating; it's the one with a steady, recent, multi-platform stream of real reviews that both humans and AI models can actually find.
