How to Get More Hotel Reviews (Without Breaking OTA Rules)

The reliable way to get more hotel reviews is to ask every guest, the same way, right after checkout — by email, SMS, or a QR code at the front desk or in the room — without filtering who gets asked based on how the stay went. Consistency and timing drive volume far more than any single clever request ever does. Most properties already have the ingredients: a guest list, contact details from booking, and a checkout moment when the stay is still fresh. What's usually missing is a system that fires the request automatically instead of depending on someone at the front desk remembering to send it. Good post-stay review requests for hotels run on a timer, not on whoever's working that shift. The channels that actually work Post-checkout email or SMS. Sent within a few hours of checkout — not three days later — with a direct link to your Google Business Profile or whichever platform you most want reviews on. Urgency fades fast; a request sent the same day consistently outperforms one sent a week later. A QR code at the front desk or in the welcome book. A code on the checkout counter or printed inside the room's welcome folder catches guests while they're still thinking about the stay, with no typing required beyond a tap. A QR code generator built for Google reviews makes this a five-minute setup rather than a design project. A verbal ask at checkout. "If you have a minute later today, we'd appreciate a Google review" costs nothing and primes the guest to actually act on the text or email that follows. Ask everyone — never just the guests who seemed happy It's tempting to skip the request for a guest who complained about the thermostat or seemed rushed at checkout, and only send it to the ones who smiled on the way out. That's review gating, and it's against the terms of TripAdvisor, Booking.com, and Airbnb alike, as well as prohibited outright under the FTC's rule on fake and deceptive reviews (16 CFR Part 465). It also backfires: a profile made up entirely of five-star reviews with no honest four-star reviews mixed in tends to read as curated rather than trustworthy. Send the same request to every guest, every time. Our guide on why review gating is a legal risk covers the specifics if you want the full rule. The same logic applies to incentives — never offer a discount, a free night, or a gift card in exchange for a review. It's against FTC rules, and Booking.com, Airbnb, and Vrbo each have their own policies against paying for reviews on top of that. If you want ready-made wording to adapt for your own property's voice, our review request text message templates are a reasonable starting point — just remember that Yelp specifically prohibits asking customers for reviews at all, so leave Yelp out of any request template you send. How soon after checkout should I send the request? Within a few hours is the general rule — same day, before the guest is back into travel logistics or has moved on to the next stop. For a multi-night stay, checkout day itself still beats waiting until the following week. Should I ask guests in person, or only by email or text? Both, ideally. A brief verbal mention at checkout plus a follow-up link by SMS or email tends to produce more reviews than either alone, since the verbal ask primes the guest and the digital one gives them the actual link when they're ready to act.
