Commercial Auto Insurance for Service Fleets: Coverage You Actually Need
Coverage needs and costs vary by state, vehicles, use, and driving records — this is general information, not insurance advice. Work with a licensed agent.
Why your personal policy isn’t enough
Personal auto insurance typically excludes business use. Drive a vehicle to jobs, haul equipment, or have employees drive it, and a claim can be denied under a personal policy — leaving you personally exposed for damage, injuries, and liability. For anything beyond incidental use, commercial auto is not optional; it’s the coverage that actually responds when a work vehicle is involved (and it’s separate from general liability).
What commercial auto covers
- Liability — bodily injury and property damage you cause with a work vehicle (usually the required core).
- Physical damage — collision and comprehensive for your own vehicles.
- Medical payments / injury coverage for occupants.
- Uninsured/underinsured motorist protection.
- Higher limits suited to business risk — often needed for commercial contracts.
Coverage a service fleet actually needs
- Adequate liability limits. Business accidents can be costly; carry enough to protect the company’s assets — and to meet client/licensing requirements.
- Physical damage on your vehicles — a totaled work truck you can’t replace stops your business.
- Coverage for all drivers — make sure employees who drive are covered (and vet their records).
- Hired/non-owned auto — if employees ever drive their own or rented vehicles for work, this fills a common gap.
- Tools/equipment consideration — cargo/equipment coverage may need a separate endorsement or policy; don’t assume it’s included.
How to manage the cost
- Shop and bundle — often cheaper packaged with your other business policies.
- Vet driving records — clean records lower premiums; a bad driver raises them for the whole fleet.
- Right-size limits and vehicles to real needs.
- Promote safe driving — fewer claims means lower long-run rates.
- Fold it into overhead so it’s priced into jobs (overhead recovery).
Include it in your setup checklist alongside your other coverages (licenses & permits).
