What Service schema is for
A local business usually sells several distinct services, and each one often has its own page. Service schema describes that page precisely: the kind of service, the business providing it, the areas it covers and — where you advertise one — the price. It helps search engines understand a service page as more than generic text, and it gives AI assistants a clean way to answer questions like “who does emergency drain cleaning near me and roughly what does it cost?”
How to fill it in
- • Service type. Name the specific service, the way a customer would search for it.
- • Provider. The business delivering it — usually a LocalBusiness, occasionally a broader Organization.
- • Areas served. The towns or regions you cover, comma-separated.
- • Price and currency, kept separate. Enter the number in one field and pick the currency code in the other. The tool refuses a currency symbol inside the price.
The price mistake this tool prevents
The single most common Service/Offer error is writing the price as “$150” or “150 USD.” Schema.org expects "price": "150" and a separate "priceCurrency": "USD". Mixing them makes the offer unparseable, so a validator either drops the price or rejects the offer. This generator splits the two and flags any symbol that ends up in the number, so the output is valid by construction.
Where it fits with your other markup
Put Service markup on each service page and keep the overall LocalBusiness schema on your homepage or contact page. If a service page also answers common questions, add an FAQ schema for the visible Q&A. Validate everything in the Rich Results Test before publishing.
Limitations
Service markup describes the offer; it doesn’t guarantee a rich result or a ranking change, and Google will only trust prices and claims that match the visible page. Keep the markup aligned with what the customer actually sees and can buy.
Frequently asked questions
- When should I use Service schema instead of LocalBusiness?
- Use LocalBusiness for the business as a whole (your homepage or contact page) and Service for each individual service you offer — “emergency plumbing,” “teeth whitening,” “roof repair.” A dedicated service page with Service markup describes exactly what’s offered, who provides it and where.
- Why must the price be a plain number?
- In schema.org an Offer has two separate fields: a numeric price and a priceCurrency code. Putting the currency inside the price — “$50” instead of price 50 with priceCurrency USD — is one of the most common structured-data errors and can invalidate the offer. This generator keeps them apart and warns you if a symbol sneaks into the price.
- What is areaServed for?
- areaServed lists the places you deliver the service — the towns, neighbourhoods or regions you cover. For a local service business it’s an important signal of where you operate, especially when you serve customers beyond your single address.
- Can I mark up reviews on a service page?
- Only if real, visible reviews of that service live on the page. Review rich snippets require the rating to reflect the page content and be shown to visitors; self-serving ratings are ignored. Use the review schema generator where genuine reviews exist.
- Is it free?
- Yes — free, no signup, no credit card. It runs entirely in your browser.
