Getting more reviews as a plumber

Plumbing is bought on trust and urgency. When a pipe bursts or a water heater dies, people search “plumber near me,” glance at the star ratings and call one of the top three — often without reading a single review in full. That means your rating and review count do the selling before you ever speak to the customer. Unlike a retail purchase, a plumbing job has an unmistakable finish line: the leak stops, the drain clears, the new fixture works, and the customer can see it with their own eyes. That visible result is the perfect moment to ask for a review, because satisfaction is highest right when the problem they were stressed about is solved. The strongest approach is a text sent as you pack up or an hour after you leave, while the relief is fresh — plumbers who wait until the next day lose most of those reviews to a busy evening. Because plumbing is often a one-time emergency rather than a recurring visit, you may only get one chance to ask each customer, so make it count: a short message, a direct link, no friction. Technicians in the field can mention it face to face (“if the fix holds up, a quick review really helps us”) and hand over a card with a QR code for customers who’d rather scan than tap a link. Keep every ask neutral and send everyone to the same public link — do not filter for the happy jobs or promise a discount on future work, both of which break Google’s rules and can get your reviews removed. For a trade where a single strong review week can noticeably move your position in the map pack, a consistent same-day ask is the highest-leverage habit you can build.

When to ask

Ask the moment the job is done and the customer can see the fix working — water flowing, leak stopped, no mess left behind. On the same visit, right after they’ve paid, is ideal; a follow-up text an hour later catches anyone you missed.

Do

  • • Ask on the same visit, right after the customer sees the fix working.
  • • Send one text with the review link before you drive to the next job.
  • • Invite them to reply if something isn’t right, so problems come to you first.

Don’t

  • • Don’t offer money off the next call-out in exchange for a review.
  • • Don’t skip the customers whose jobs were awkward.
  • • Don’t tell them what rating to leave.

Keep it compliant

Every template here is written to follow Google’s review policies: no incentives, no filtering by how happy the customer is, and no asking for a specific star rating. If you tweak the wording or run a promotion, check it first with the GBP policy checker. Need your review link? Build one with the review link generator.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a plumber to ask for a review?
Ask the moment the job is done and the customer can see the fix working — water flowing, leak stopped, no mess left behind. On the same visit, right after they’ve paid, is ideal; a follow-up text an hour later catches anyone you missed.
Can I offer a discount or gift for a review?
No. Incentivised reviews break Google’s policies and can get your reviews removed. Thank customers warmly, but never tie any reward to leaving a review.
Should I only ask my happy customers?
No — ask everyone the same way and send them all to the same public link. Filtering by how satisfied someone seems (“review gating”) is against Google’s rules and easy to detect.
Are these templates free to use?
Yes — free, no signup, no credit card. Just add your business name, the customer’s name and your review link.
