Getting more reviews as a law firm

Choosing a lawyer is a high-stakes, high-anxiety decision, and prospective clients lean heavily on reviews to judge competence, responsiveness and trustworthiness before they’ll book a consultation. For a law firm, a strong body of recent reviews is both a marketing asset and a credibility signal in a field where credibility is everything. The natural time to ask is at the conclusion of a matter, when the client is relieved and grateful for a good outcome — a settlement reached, a case closed, a contract completed. That said, legal work demands more sensitivity than most trades: some matters are painful or private, and the ask has to be judged case by case, never mechanical. A personal, respectful invitation from the attorney or the firm — “if you’re comfortable, we’d value your feedback” — is far more appropriate than an automated blast. Because legal engagements are usually infrequent, each satisfied client is a rare and valuable chance for a detailed review, and prospective clients particularly value specifics about communication and results. Reviews feed your Google Business Profile and the “lawyer near me” and practice-area searches that drive new inquiries. Compliance matters twice over here: beyond Google’s policies, attorneys have professional-conduct rules about testimonials, so keep client reviews genuine and unscripted, never offer any incentive, and never suggest what to say or how many stars to leave. Also be mindful that clients should not disclose confidential details; a neutral prompt to “share your experience working with us” keeps reviews appropriate. Send every client the same public link and let honest feedback stand on its own. Handled with care, an at-resolution review habit builds the reputation that turns searches into consultations.

When to ask

Ask when the matter concludes and the client is satisfied with the outcome — after a settlement, a closed case or a completed filing. Timing must respect the sensitivity of the matter.

Do

  • • Ask at the conclusion of the matter, case by case.
  • • Keep the invitation personal and respectful.
  • • Remind clients they needn’t share confidential details.

Don’t

  • • Don’t offer any incentive for a review.
  • • Don’t script the review or suggest a rating.
  • • Don’t ask when the matter or outcome is sensitive.

Keep it compliant

Every template here is written to follow Google’s review policies: no incentives, no filtering by how happy the customer is, and no asking for a specific star rating. If you tweak the wording or run a promotion, check it first with the GBP policy checker. Need your review link? Build one with the review link generator.

Frequently asked questions

When is the best time for a law firm to ask for a review?
Ask when the matter concludes and the client is satisfied with the outcome — after a settlement, a closed case or a completed filing. Timing must respect the sensitivity of the matter.
Can I offer a discount or gift for a review?
No. Incentivised reviews break Google’s policies and can get your reviews removed. Thank customers warmly, but never tie any reward to leaving a review.
Should I only ask my happy customers?
No — ask everyone the same way and send them all to the same public link. Filtering by how satisfied someone seems (“review gating”) is against Google’s rules and easy to detect.
Are these templates free to use?
Yes — free, no signup, no credit card. Just add your business name, the customer’s name and your review link.
